The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic instances β not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating β occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse β the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked β genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined β independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the chief executive seek toι’ θ¦ the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us β within elder demographics almost a majority β who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically definitely not the story of a mighty king arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, especially for the disadvantaged β not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to offer the opposite cheek β not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The evident and clear truth that Christ of the gospels advocates for a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. In the fifties it was contained through watering down β Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the determined opposition against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We must have to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be distinctive and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most negative of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both humility and faith, a blend that committed national faithful should embrace.
